Great News
We have recently become one of only two clinics in South Australia registered to administer radio-active iodine (I131) to cats with hyperthyroidism. I131 is generally recognised to be the definitive treatment for cats with an overactive thyroid gland. It involves the administration of a capsule containing radio-active iodine followed by a weeks stay in our radiation ward. Over 90% of cats with hyperthyroidism are cured by this one off treatment. This means no ongoing medication requirements which can be stressfull for cat and owner alike
Arthritis
Every year joints start to stiffen and those old sporting injuries
start to ache just that little bit more, and I’m not just talking
about humans. The four legged members of the family can feel the
colder weather just as much as you or I.
Arthritis pain can be insidious and creeps up over time. There are
many different ways arthritis can affect your pets, but it is the
early days of the disease that effective treatment can provide the
most benefit. Stiffness in the morning or after exercise, not
wanting (or not able to) finish a walk with the same gusto or just
slowing down when it comes to playing in the backyard can all be
early signs of joint pain.
There are numerous ways to control and relieve the symptoms of
arthritis but nothing can ‘cure’ it yet. Several anti-inflammatories
have been around for a couple of years now and they have been
very effective at lessening the discomfort of arthritis, there
are medications designed to modify the joints themselves and there
are some remedies straight out of old wives tails.
No drug by itself is going to provide miracles, but this one may
help where others have failed to stand the test of time. Weight
loss, diets and regular, sensible exercise all provide support for
ongoing arthritic patients and should never be ignored when trying
to treat one of the most common diseases in older animals.
Cattery
Our cat holiday centre is now fully operational. Your special ones
can now spend some time away from home in comfort with a multi-level
run with sling beds and shelves to play on. Individually cats are
given extra room and playtime in the Cat-Max enclosure located
within the cattery for that extra bit of fun and exercise. Safety is
ensured by keeping a rostered time in the enclosure for everyone.
Overweight Pets
On a cold day outside we all like to come inside. If the weather
upsets the normal routine of walking and exercise for you and your
pets watch out for the expanding waist line! 41% of dogs and 31% of
cats are overweight! That is an astounding figure.
If you think the battle of the bulge is not going to plan, drop in
and check out what the scales say. We also have a weight loss
program where we tailor diets specific to your pet. Come in and talk
to one of our weight loss advisors.
Hydrobath Reminder
A hydrobath has been installed undercover at the clinic. It is available during business hours for DIY use.
Shampoo, towels, grooming equipment and blow drying are all included. With the hydrobath bathing can be
fun and easy, whatever the weather.
P.S. Have 5 hydrobaths and the sixth is free.
